Predictions for movies get more erratic as the awards season goes on, but at this point a few winners are pretty clear to tell.
Best Motion Picture - Drama
Avatar
The Hurt Locker
Inglorious Basterds
Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
Up in the Air
Will/Should Win: Up in the Air or The Hurt Locker
Considering the way that both have garnered the most acclaim/awards, it's a toss up. Up in the Air got the top film of the year on the AFI list and numerous critics' lists, but The Hurt Locker is quickly gaining steam. It won the biggest award at the Critics' Choice Awards on Friday, and its on many of the lists that Up in the Air is on. I would not be surprised to see Air take it, however.
Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
(500) Days of Summer
The Hangover
It's Complicated
Julie & Julia
Nine
Will Win/Should Win: (500) Days of Summer
Yes, I may have been in love with this film since the day it was released. And I may be under the spell of the indie/nonlinear storytelling/amazing soundtrack of this film. However, I've seen the majority of the nominees, and Summer has the strongest overall plot, acting, and directing. If it's not (500) Days of Summer, count on Nine and its star-studded cast.
Best Director - Motion Picture
Kathryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker
Quentin Tarantino - Inglorious Basterds
Clint Eastwood - Invictus
Jason Reitman - Up in the Air
James Cameron - Avatar
Will Win: James Cameron
I hate myself for saying this, but I would not be shocked to see him win. I didn't like the movie other than the animation, but he's picked up so much steam lately that it's sadly inevitable. Let's hope this doesn't stay the same at the Oscars.
Should Win: Kathryn Bigelow
I'm not just saying this because she's a woman, and I love when the minority directors win. She won the Critic's Choice Award, and her job on the film has been given so much acclaim. I would love to see her win.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
George Clooney - Up in the Air
Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart
Colin Firth - A Single Man
Morgan Freeman - Invictus
Tobey Maguire - Brothers
Will Win: George Clooney
His film is the definite awards pick. He almost is in this category, but he does face some strong competitors (minus Tobey Maguire, who's probably going to be replaced by Jeremy Renner at the Oscars).
Should Win: Jeff Bridges
It's been called the best of his career. It's a down on his luck country singer and his troubled tall, How is that not awards bait? I'm hoping that he can knock Clooney off his awards throne.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama
Emily Blunt - The Young Victoria
Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side
Carey Mulligan - An Education
Gabourey Sidibe - Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
Helen Mirren - The Last Station
Will Win: Carey Mulligan or Gabourey Sidibe
Out of these nominees, they have the most buzz and awards so far. It's not the most exciting choice, but it's not a shocker.
Should Win: Sandra Bullock
I loved The Blind Side. It's the best performance of Sandra's career. Can she please take home the award? She doesn't have that great of an Oscar chance, so can we give her the Globe
Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
Daniel Day-Lewis - Nine
Matt Damon - The Informant!
Robert Downey, Jr. - Sherlock Holmes
Joseph Gordon Levitt - (500) Days of Summer
Michael Stuhlbarg - A Serious Man
Will Win: Daniel Day-Lewis
He's a great actor, it's a star-studded film, and it's Rob Marshall (anyone remember how huge Chicago was?). It's only the actual film that could take him down, considering how harsh critics have been to it.
Should Win: Toss-Up
It's honestly the hardest to predict if Daniel doesn't win. I'm rooting for RDJ and JGL (gotta love the three name people!), because I've never seen A Serious Man or The Informant! I'm gonna root for Levitt much more, though.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
Sandra Bullock - The Proposal
Meryl Streep - It's Complicated
Meryl Streep - Julie & Julia
Marion Cotillard - Nine
Julia Roberts - Duplicity
Will Win/Should Win: Sandra Bullock or Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia)
They won the Critic's Choice, so this wouldn't be that big of a surprise. I'm pulling for Marion, though. Just a slight pull.
Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture
Matt Damon - Invictus
Woody Harrelson - The Messenger
Christopher Plummer - The Last Station
Stanley Tucci - The Lovely Bones
Christoph Waltz - Inglorious Basterds
Will Win/Should Win: Christoph Waltz or Stanley Tucci
Those other nominees really don't stand a chance. It's more "best performances of the career!" type actors in this category. I'm leaning towards Stanley Tucci because I adore his acting, but at this point it could go either way.
Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture
Penelope Cruz - Nine
Vera Farmiga - Up in the Air
Anna Kendrick - Up in the Air
Mo'Nique - Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
Julianne Moore - A Single Man
Will Win/Should Win: Mo'Nique
Why should she win? Because they've been calling it since the film was announced. She's stood out among a stellar cast, and she's the one true lock in all of the acting categories.
Best Screenplay - Motion Picture
Quentin Tarantino - Inglorious Basterds
Mark Boal - The Hurt Locker
Neil Blomkamp, Terri Tatchell - District 9
Nancy Meyers - It's Complicated
Jason Reitman, Sheldon Turner - Up in the Air
Will Win/Should Win: Jason Reitman
I wish he would've won for directing Juno, and since he won't win for Up in the Air, the Globes might give it to him and his partner in this category.
Best Animated Feature
Coraline
Up
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
The Princess and the Frog
Will Win/Should Win: Up
...It's Pixar. Do any of the others have a chance? It's gotta be Pixar.
And now onto the actual Globes! Let's see how my predictions hold up.
